Xabi Alonso has sent a strong message to his squad regarding their collective attitude for the upcoming season. A report from Cadena SER on Monday offered insight into the latest developments within the team’s camp as they prepare for a fresh start.
Real Madrid is set to begin a new chapter this coming Wednesday. This change follows a disappointing 2024/25 campaign under Carlo Ancelotti, leading Florentino Pérez and the club to appoint Xabi Alonso as the new head coach. This position is the Spaniard’s first managing a club at the very top level of the sport.
According to Javier Herráez of SER, Alonso was very direct with his new group of players from the start. He emphasized that running and effort are absolute requirements for everyone in the squad. He stated that any player not showing effort will not play, regardless of their name or status.
Alonso outlined clear consequences for players who do not meet these standards. He reportedly said saving a run would result in a yellow card, and a second instance would mean a red card. He made it clear there would be little tolerance for slacking, demanding players consistently put pressure on opponents, even if they are not primarily defenders.
