Real Madrid inches closer to signing Carreras, avoids €50m clause

Real Madrid and Benfica are nearing an agreement for Alvaro Carreras. This transfer operation has been more complex than expected. Initially, Benfica demanded the player’s full €50 million release clause, making the deal seem difficult, especially before the FIFA Club World Cup. The transfer is now progressing towards completion once the Club World Cup concludes.

As per Marca, Real Madrid will not pay Alvaro Carreras’ full €50 million release clause. Benfica has become willing to negotiate the fee. This change reflects the player’s strong desire to return to his former club.

The potential fee might be around €40 million. Benfica initially paid €8 million for him last summer, so they will still make a significant profit. Manchester United will also receive compensation from the transfer.

Efforts to complete the deal are ongoing from Real Madrid’s camp in the USA. An agreement is close, but it is not yet finalised or signed. Both sides agree that nothing can be confirmed until the operation is fully closed. Final in-person meetings are still needed to process everything.

The breakthrough came when Benfica showed interest in Real Madrid’s 21-year-old prospect, Rafael Obrador. Benfica sees Obrador as a player who could greatly increase in value later.

Obrador is expected to move to Benfica in a separate €5 million transfer. Real Madrid will include a buy-back option for him. These independent operations highlight Real Madrid’s determination to re-sign Carreras. The Carreras and Obrador deals are separate transfers, not a single player-plus-cash agreement as some might think.
