Real Madrid defender targets starting spot after double ACL nightmare

Eder Militao

Eder Militao is nearing his return after suffering two major knee injuries that sidelined him for much of the past two seasons. After diligent work on his recovery, the Brazilian international is expected to rejoin the squad soon. His focus is now firmly set on getting back onto the field and competing for a regular place.

Militao faced a difficult period, sidelined by separate ACL injuries in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons. Having worked hard on his recovery, he is now close to a comeback and is expected to be in the squad for the FIFA Club World Cup match against Juventus.

Reports indicate Militao is back training in excellent condition and is keen to get minutes in the tournament, aiming to reclaim his starting position in the lineup.

During Militao’s time away, Raul Asencio and Antonio Rudiger formed the primary central defense pairing for Real Madrid. Since arriving in the summer, Dean Huijsen has established himself as a guaranteed starter.

This development means Rudiger and Asencio are now competing for the remaining central defensive spot in the team.

Militao is now ready to enter this battle for a starting berth, although he must first gain match minutes to rebuild his rhythm after months out. An opening could appear if manager Xabi Alonso decides to regularly use a three-man defense.

This might be more likely especially as Asencio has not had the best start in the current Club World Cup tournament. Ultimately, Militao’s priority is to get back into his groove after spending a significant portion of the season injured.
