El Chiringuito journalist sounds alarm on Argentine’s Madrid future

What Real Madrid fans can expect from Franco Mastantuono’s arrival

Real Madrid recently secured the signing of 17-year-old midfielder Franco Mastantuono from River Plate. He signed a long-term contract with the club, set to run until 2031. While already a Madrid player, he will not join the team until August 14 of next year. The young player recently made his debut in the Club World Cup for River Plate, featuring in their 3-1 win against Urawa Red Diamonds in Buenos Aires this Tuesday.

From the United States, where the expanded World Cup is being held, commentator Edu Aguirre discussed the signing on “El Chiringuito de Jugones.” He urged for patience with Mastantuono, highlighting the need for him to adapt to European football. Aguirre mentioned that Madrid paid 50 million for the teenager. He isn’t expected to immediately start but is viewed as a potential future Ballon d’Or winner. Aguirre cautioned against being overly critical of him shortly after his arrival.

Madrid had monitored Mastantuono for many months and considered signing him last summer. This move did not happen initially because River Plate wanted his full €45 million release clause paid at once. The situation changed and the deal was reactivated days ago when PSG showed interest in the player.

Aguirre also addressed potential comparisons between Mastantuono and Lamine Yamal. He called such comparisons a mistake and unfair. This is because Yamal has been with Barcelona’s first team since age 15. Mastantuono will require an adaptation period of five or six months. Aguirre noted that players like Rodrygo and Vinícius also spent time adapting at Castilla.
