Club World Cup schedule puts Real Madrid’s La Liga opener at risk

Real Madrid’s first La Liga game of the 2025/26 season faces potential disruption. A report from Mundo Deportivo indicates their Club World Cup participation could cause a postponement. How they perform in the tournament will be crucial.

The opening La Liga match for Real Madrid against Osasuna might be delayed. The 2025/26 fixture list is set, but their Club World Cup involvement creates this uncertainty.

Their quarter-final is Saturday, July 5. Progressing further directly affects the league start date. Advancing means the first matchday could be postponed.

The issue ties into player agreements on rest and pre-season time. Players must get 30 summer days off, with 21 being uninterrupted holidays.

The Spanish Footballers’ Association talked to captains, including Real Madrid’s. They aimed for 21 days off and 21 for pre-season. An early Club World Cup exit allows this plan.

Reaching the semi-finals (July 8/9) or final (July 13) wouldn’t leave enough time for a proper pre-season. This may lead Real Madrid to ask for their opening game to be postponed.

La Liga and the Federation seem unwilling to change the schedule, arguing the agreement only covers rest, not pre-season. Deep tournament progress could still cause chaos for the first matchday without enough preparation time.
