Dani Ceballos did not feature in Xabi Alonso’s first match as Real Madrid manager. He stayed on the bench against Al Hilal in the FIFA Club World Cup. This omission, making him the only fit unused player, has reportedly caused disappointment for the midfielder.
Ceballos remained on the bench during the entire match despite warming up. This was manager Xabi Alonso’s debut in charge. For Ceballos, having trained with Alonso from the beginning, this lack of minutes was a significant disappointment, according to SPORT.
Not using Ceballos was unexpected, particularly after Real Madrid’s midfield difficulties in the first half. Under Carlo Ancelotti, Ceballos had found a place in the rotation towards the end, bringing fluidity. Now, a feeling is emerging that Alonso may not favour the midfielder.

This impression stems from Alonso’s initial decisions. He started Arda Guler as a playmaker alongside Luka Modric, who is expected to depart. The manager is also reportedly urging the club to secure a new central midfielder signing.
Ceballos has been in similar situations and was previously open to leaving if offers met demands. He is willing to consider a departure once more. His former club, Real Betis, is keen on bringing him back. A key hurdle is financial; Real Madrid values him at €20 million, but his market value is closer to €10 million.
